The fire broke out at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, in a large single-family home on Mary Mead Court in Potomac, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer.
Firefighters were dispatched after a call came in from the homeowners reporting flames coming from the roof.

When first responders arrived, they found heavy fire conditions throughout the second floor and roof area, officials said.
A second alarm was called, bringing close to 90 firefighters to battle the flames. Crews launched an aggressive interior attack before knocking the fire down from the exterior, they added.

All occupants were able to escape the home without injuries, though they will be displaced due to the extent of the damage.
The fire caused a partial collapse of the chimney and other parts of the structure.

Amid the chaos, firefighters also managed to rescue a group of baby chicks, which had just been acquired for Easter.
Officials confirmed the chicks were safely removed and are now being cared for. However, the monetary loss "will be significant."
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
